The scrap metal operations in the Callaloo Bed area of Spanish Town Road, Kingston 11 seem to be creating some environmental problems.
The problem has been attributed to the processing of scrap metal in the area for export.
To this end, Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie is calling for the support of Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Karl Samuda in dealing with the problem.
He said waste from the operations has blocked some drains and prevented access to others which are also in need of cleaning.
Mayor McKenzie said this is threatening the area with flooding-evident during last weekend’s heavy rains.
He said an inspection by representatives of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation city engineer’s department also confirmed that the operations were having an effect on the drains in the Kingston 11 community.
Callaloo Bed in Western St Andrew is the site of most of the scrap metal operations in the city, which is centred around the Riverton landfill.
