Restoring Peace within Jamaica’s Inner-City Communities

The issue of crime and violence in Jamaica’s inner-city communities is not breaking news to Jamaicans living at home and abroad. Presently, crime it at an all-time high and demands our immediate attention if we expect to restore peace within the imaginary walls of those communities for many years to come. To accomplish this will be extremely difficult, but with the right community based services and leadership, Jamaica could be returned to its glory days.

The following includes a list of suggestions on how we could go about bringing about peace and togetherness in violent riddled communities throughout Jamaica.

  1. Encourage security forces, and public officials to attend sensitivity training workshops at least three times each year
  2. Implement community based conflict mediation services
  3. Adequately fund early childhood education
  4. Promote the importance of brotherhood and togetherness
  5. Remove all direct and indirect political affiliations with community Dons and area leaders
  6. Have readily available community based counseling services for residents, particularly teenagers and young adults
  7. Encourage religious organizations to become more active within their respected communities and serve as its moral compass
  8. Remove all political border lines to promote unity despite political affiliations
  9. Offer low-cost skills training workshops to unemployed young men and women
  10. Continue to support the police force in their efforts to reduce crime, dismantle gangs, and remove illegal guns from the hands of criminals.
